After your taster course: rent a pump foil for a month before you buy

After your taster course, the cheapest way to keep progressing is usually to rent a pump foil set by the month, ride it at your own lake, and buy only once you know which setup you ride. Day rental adds up fast, and a set you buy now is often the wrong size a season later.

Why do most people stall after the taster course?

A taster course teaches you the dock start. It can't give you the repetitions. Zeno Davatz, who teaches with Pump Tsüri on Lake Zurich, writes in How I teach pumpfoiling (August 2026) that most people need 300 to 600 starts before the dock start clicks. That is many sessions, not one weekend.

One session a week on borrowed or day-rented gear gets you there slowly, with a week to forget between tries. Gear in your own cellar means an hour after work whenever the water is flat. Progress follows the number of starts, not the number of courses.

FoilHive doesn't run lessons or taster sessions. Our Swiss pump foiling guide lists the schools we know around Zurich, and the Lake Zurich rules.

What do you need to keep progressing?

  • A front wing sized to your weight. A bigger wing lifts off at a lower speed, so you get fewer failed starts. On our pack, riders up to about 75 kg usually start on the Osprey 1850 and heavier riders on the Osprey 2250. The Osprey 1450 suits lighter riders, or a livelier dock start once you can pump. The pump foil size guide explains why.
  • A mast and fuselage that match the wing. The pack uses an aluminium mast. The 1850 rides an 80 cm mast; the 2250 a stiffer 75 cm mast with its own fuselage.
  • A pump board. A pump board won't float you, so you land on it already moving. Ours is the Takoon Pump Wood 80, the same for every rider, with the Stab 220 tail wing.

Learning to wing foil instead? We rent the foil only: a complete foil (front wing, tail wing, mast and fuselage) costs €131,47 to €161,28 a month, depending on the front wing. We don't rent wings, and boards come only in the Pump Foil Pack.

What are your options after the course?

Keep renting by the day, buy a set (new or used), or rent by the month. It depends on how often you will ride.

Option Cost Good for The catch
Day rental (PumpFoiling.coach) From CHF 95 a day A few extra sessions You pay again every session. Ten days cost at least CHF 950.
Beginner course (PumpFoiling.coach) CHF 290 for two 1.5-hour sessions, gear included Learning the dock start with a coach Two sessions, not a season
New starter set Up to about CHF 1,500, according to Pump Tsüri Riders sure they will keep going Your first wing size is fixed. If you outgrow it, you resell.
Used pump set About CHF 1,500 to 1,900 for a complete set (Swiss listings, 14 October 2026) Riders who know what to check Only one complete used set was on the Swiss market that day. Cheaper listings are nearly always the foil with no board. Condition, missing parts and fit between brands are your problem.
FoilHive Pump Foil Pack €178,01 a month (Osprey 1450 or 1850) or €193,46 a month (Osprey 2250) Riding every week for a season You keep paying while you ride, and own nothing at the end

Day rental and course prices checked on 9 October 2026, used listings on 14 October. We bill in euros only, so we don't convert. Three months on the pack at the lower price come to €534,03, before any shipping. For buying used, read our used foil gear guide first.

How does a FoilHive month work?

FoilHive is a Belgian non-profit that rents foil gear by the month. We don't sell it. Our sister brand ONIX Foils builds and repairs it in our workshop in Tarifa, Spain.

  • Pick the pack. The Pump Foil Pack is board plus foil, with 16% off the combined rental price. Choose the front wing by weight.
  • Verify your identity. It takes about two minutes on your phone, before the gear is released.
  • In Switzerland, collect in Zurich. Swiss members collect from our hub north of the city centre, a short ride from the lake. Collection is free from €170 a month, which in practice means a Pump Foil Pack. We send the address and arrange a time by email. At checkout, don't choose 'Pickup': it means collecting in Spain. If your gear has to travel from Spain, you pay the Swiss import VAT and any customs duty, and we tell you before it leaves.
  • Elsewhere, we ship. You pay outbound and return shipping at checkout, so the return label is covered. Gear ships every Tuesday, with tracking.
  • FoilCare is included. It covers scratches and cosmetic wear from normal use. You pay for damage beyond normal wear, or lost or stolen gear. We invoice first and you have 7 days to dispute.
  • Swap as you progress. Any time, while the item you want is in stock. You pay shipping and handling for the exchange, and your monthly price changes to the new item's rate. In Switzerland, front-wing swaps go through the Zurich hub, subject to availability.
  • Cancel after month one. No lock-in contract and no fee. Send the gear back. Billing continues until it arrives, and your membership closes at the end of that cycle. Gear not back within 30 days is charged at replacement cost.

The full terms are in the house rules.

When is buying the better choice?

When you have settled. If you know your wing size, ride every week and plan to keep the same setup for years, the cost per session of owned gear is hard to beat. Renting earns its keep while you are still finding your size, not after.

Buying also makes sense if you live outside the countries we serve. Our rent vs buy comparison goes into more detail.

FAQs

What is the shortest membership?

One month. You can cancel any time after the first month, with no fee. There is no trial.

Can I rent a pump foil for just a weekend?

Not from us. We rent by the month. For a single day, PumpFoiling.coach rents from CHF 95 a day.

Which front wing should I start on?

Go by weight. On our pack, up to about 75 kg usually means the Osprey 1850, heavier riders the Osprey 2250. See the size guide.

Can I change wing size halfway through the season?

Yes, while the wing you want is in stock. You pay shipping and handling, and your monthly price changes to the new wing's rate.

Do I need a lesson first?

Yes. A coach on the dock speeds up your first start. FoilHive doesn't teach, so book with a school such as Pump Tsüri or PumpFoiling.coach.

Can I pay in Swiss francs?

No. We bill in euros only.

Sources and how we checked

The 300 to 600 starts figure and the CHF 1,500 starter-set ceiling come from Zeno Davatz's How I teach pumpfoiling on pump.zuerich. Day rental and course prices come from PumpFoiling.coach, checked on 9 October 2026. The used-set range comes from Swiss classified listings read on 14 October 2026, counting only sets where the listing confirms a board is included. FoilHive prices and terms come from our live membership page and house rules, checked on 13 October 2026.

ONIX Foils is our sister brand: it builds and repairs our gear.
