Foil setup on Tarifa beach with the wind-swept ocean

How to read Tarifa's Levante and Poniente winds

Tarifa is the windiest town in continental Europe, and almost all of that wind comes from exactly two directions. Levante blows east-to-west through the Strait of Gibraltar; Poniente blows west-to-east the other way. They feel completely different, break on completely different beaches, and require different gear. We're based here, our Tarifa workshop is 6 km from Valdevaqueros, so this guide comes from living with both of these winds year-round, not from a Wikipedia skim.

Levante, the hot, gusty, Moroccan wind

  • Direction: Easterly, funnelling through the Strait at roughly 90°–110°.
  • Strength: Typically 18–35 knots; extremes hit 45+. Gusty, especially close to Tarifa town and Playa Chica.
  • Character: Hot, dry, sand-laden. Builds through the day. Often cloudless.
  • Best spots for foiling: Valdevaqueros (offshore Levante, flat water close to shore, side-offshore further out, intermediate+ only due to offshore direction), Playa Chica (sheltered but gusty), or the downwind runs from Tangana to Los Lances if you're experienced.
  • Best months: May through September, with July/August the most reliable.

Poniente, the cool, clean, Atlantic wind

  • Direction: Westerly, roughly 240°–290°.
  • Strength: Typically 15–25 knots. Cleaner, less gusty than Levante.
  • Character: Cooler, humid, often with cloud and swell. Brings Atlantic groundswell to the beaches.
  • Best spots for foiling: Los Lances (onshore Poniente, main beach, beginner-friendly, lots of schools), Balneario (slightly more protected), Bolonia further northwest if you want space.
  • Best months: Year-round but most frequent in winter and spring (November–April).

Step-by-step: pick your day

  1. Check the forecast 24 hours ahead. Windy.com or Windguru, look at the direction arrow first, wind speed second.
  2. Identify wind direction. East/northeast = Levante. West/southwest = Poniente.
  3. Match spot to wind. Levante → Valdevaqueros or Playa Chica. Poniente → Los Lances or Balneario.
  4. Check gust factor. Size your handheld wing for the average minus 2 knots and plan to sheet out.
  5. Watch the webcam. Organized rows of whitecaps = clean wind. Patchy whitecaps = gusty.
  6. Time it. Levante typically peaks 14:00–18:00. Poniente is steadier but often strongest mid-afternoon.

Common mistakes

  • Rigging for the gust. Size for the average.
  • Launching at Los Lances on Levante. It's offshore there, you get blown to Morocco.
  • Ignoring the current. The Strait has strong tidal current, up to 2 knots.
  • Assuming Poniente = small. Winter Poniente at Los Lances can be 25+ knots with head-high shorebreak.
  • Foiling near the commercial port. Stay west of the port entrance.

When you're ready for more

Tarifa teaches you wind in 20 sessions what flatter coasts take 200 to teach. Our gear is built and tested here, the Osprey 1850 is specifically tuned for the gusty range of Levante at Valdevaqueros. FAQ

Can I foil Tarifa in winter?

Yes, 4/3 wetsuit minimum, hood optional. Poniente sessions are cleaner in winter.

Which wind is better for beginners?

Poniente at Los Lances. Onshore (safety) and less gusty.

What's the no-wind backup?

Prone or downwind foil at Los Lances, or dockstart sessions in the harbour.

Is there a flat-water spot in strong Levante?

The shallows directly in front of Valdevaqueros hotel are flat for the first 200 m offshore even in 30+ knot Levante.
