Pump foiling in Zurich and Switzerland: spots, rules and season rental
Compartir
You can pump foil on most Swiss lakes, within the boat rules. On Lake Zurich a pump foil counts as a boat: mark the board with your name and address, carry a 50 N buoyancy aid beyond 300 m from shore, and avoid yellow-buoy zones. To ride all season without owning a set, rent one monthly and collect it in Zurich.
By James Frei, FoilHive co-founder. Rules checked against the City of Zurich's own page on 9 October 2026.
Where can you pump foil in Switzerland?
Anywhere with a stable dock or a beach you can walk into, flat water and room to glide. Search interest is highest in the cantons of Bern, Lucerne and Zurich, and the scene is busiest around Lake Zurich. These are the lakes where we can point to a club, a school or an event.
| Lake | What happens there | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Lake Zurich (Zürichsee) | Pump Tsüri trains at Tiefenbrunnen; Foil Club Zürichsee meets year-round in Meilen | City of Zurich rules apply inside the city; no official practice site since May 2025, according to Pump Tsüri |
| Lake Zug and Lake Ägeri | Private coaching from PumpFoiling.coach | Same federal boat rules as Lake Zurich |
| Lake Biel (Bielersee) | Hosted the 2026 Swiss Championships at Vingelz | Check local bathing zones before you launch |
| Other lakes (Thun, Lucerne, Constance) | Riders launch from public docks and beaches | Use a spot map and ask locals before you jump off a private dock |
For individual spots, use the open map at pump.zuerich/spots or the Foilersworld spotfinder. We would rather link a map kept by people on the water than copy one that goes out of date.
What are the rules for pump foiling on Lake Zurich?
The City of Zurich publishes the rules on its pumpfoiling page. They come from the federal inland navigation ordinance (BSV), so they apply on other Swiss lakes too. As of 9 October 2026 they say:
- A pump foil counts as a boat. It can't be registered, so mark the board visibly with your name and address. The city also suggests your mobile number.
- Buoyancy aid of at least 50 N beyond the outer shore zone (300 m from shore) and on rivers. The city recommends wearing one at all times.
- No right of way over passenger boats, cargo boats, professional fishing, sailing, rowing, paddle or motor boats. Keep clear of ferry landings, harbour entrances and buoy fields, and keep your distance from swimmers.
- Yellow-buoy zones are off-limits: bathing areas, diving zones, nature reserves and archaeological sites.
- White all-round light in fog, at dusk and at night.
- Storm lights: about 40 orange flashes a minute warns of strong wind; about 90 a minute means storm, so leave the water.
- E-foils are banned on Swiss waters. A pump foil has no motor, so it isn't affected.
Rules change, and the city's page is the binding source, not this one. Read it before your first session; this is a summary, not legal advice.
Is pump foiling allowed in the city of Zurich?
Yes, within the rules above, but there is no official practice site. According to Pump Tsüri, the city withdrew its permit for course use in May 2025, and the city council answered a written question on pump foiling on 26 August 2026. The city is looking at docks, launch ramps and rafts outside bathing season, so this may change.
On the Limmat, the stretch from Münsterbrücke to Bad Oberer Letten is closed to pump foils, and the Letten bathing areas are closed during opening hours. Bathing areas on the lake are closed during opening hours too. Most riders head out of the centre, which also means fewer swimmers to dodge.
Where can you take a lesson or join a club near Zurich?
Your first dock start comes faster with someone on the dock telling you what you did. These are the groups we know of:
- Pump Tsüri (pump.zuerich): courses from Friday to Sunday, outdoor training at Tiefenbrunnen and indoor pool sessions in winter. Run by Zeno Davatz.
- Foil Club Zürichsee: a club in Meilen with more than 80 members that meets at the lake all year.
- pumpfoilers.ch: pump foil courses in Zurich.
- PumpFoiling.coach: private coaching on Lake Zurich, Lake Zug and Lake Ägeri.
- ASVZ: pump foil and wing intro sessions for Zurich students.
- Swiss Foiling Federation: the national federation for wing and pump foiling, and organiser of the Swiss Championships.
- pumpfoiling.community: spots, courses and a summary of the Swiss rules.
FoilHive doesn't run lessons or taster sessions, so start with one of these if you have never stood on a foil.
Already done a taster course? Our guide to renting a pump foil for a month before you buy compares day rental, a used set and a monthly pack.
Day rental, a course, your own set or a season membership: what does each cost?
The right answer depends on how often you will ride. A day is cheap; a season of days isn't.
| Option | Cost | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Day rental (PumpFoiling.coach) | From CHF 95 a day | Trying it once |
| Beginner course (PumpFoiling.coach) | CHF 290 for two 1.5-hour sessions, gear included | Learning the dock start with a coach |
| Your own new starter set | Up to about CHF 1,500, according to Pump Tsüri | Riders who are sure they will keep going |
| FoilHive Pump Foil Pack | €178,01 a month (Osprey 1450 or 1850) or €193,46 a month (Osprey 2250); collection in Zurich is free | Riding every week for a season without owning the gear |
Costs checked on 9 October 2026. The FoilHive figures are in euros; we don't bill in francs.
Zeno Davatz, who teaches with Pump Tsüri, puts it this way in How I teach pumpfoiling (August 2026): “A starter set should not cost more than 1,500 francs.” His advice for the rest: rent, or start together with friends. Most people need 300 to 600 starts before the dock start clicks, so plan for more than one weekend.
How does a FoilHive membership work in Switzerland?
FoilHive is a Belgian non-profit that rents foil gear by the month. The Pump Foil Pack is the only membership that includes a board: the Takoon Pump Wood 80, an aluminium mast, a fuselage, the Stab 220 tail wing and an Osprey front wing sized for your weight. Riders up to about 75 kg usually start on the Osprey 1850, heavier riders on the 2250; the pump foil size guide explains why.
- Collection: Swiss members collect their gear from our hub in Zurich, north of the city centre and a short ride from the lake. We send you the address and arrange a time.
- Minimum: collection is free from €170 a month, which in practice means a Pump Foil Pack.
- Import charges: if your gear has to travel from our workshop in Spain, you pay the Swiss import VAT and any customs duty, and we tell you what applies before it leaves. See the shipping policy.
- At checkout: don't choose 'Pickup'. It means collecting in Spain, and it sets that as your collection point for good.
- Swaps: if you outgrow your front wing, you can swap it through the Zurich hub, subject to availability.
- Cancelling: you can cancel any time after your first month, with no fee.
Before your gear is released we ask you to verify your identity, which takes about two minutes on your phone. The full terms are in the house rules.
When is pump foiling season in Switzerland?
Most people start looking from mid-May, and interest peaks in August. The committed riders don't stop: Foil Club Zürichsee meets all year, and Pump Tsüri's main training season runs from the end of October to mid-April, with indoor pool sessions in winter. A wetsuit turns a summer sport into a year-round one. And because a membership has no long contract, you can cancel when the water gets too cold for you and come back in May.
Sources and how we checked
The rules come from the City of Zurich's pumpfoiling page, which cites the federal inland navigation ordinance, and were checked on 9 October 2026. The permit status comes from Pump Tsüri's published reply to the city council, which is an advocacy source, so we attribute it. Club, course and rental details come from each organisation's own website on the same date. ONIX Foils is our sister brand: it builds and repairs our gear. Pump Tsüri teaches on ONIX packs, so we count its view as close to ours. Last checked 9 October 2026.
