What Is a Foil Membership/subscription?
A foil subscription or membership is a monthly plan that gives you a complete hydrofoil setup to ride, swap, and return, instead of buying the gear outright. You pay a recurring fee, you get a front wing, tail wing, mast, and fuselage matched to your weight and conditions, and when you progress or change disciplines you swap components rather than reselling and rebuying. FoilHive runs one. This page explains what the model is, who it suits, and how it compares to the alternatives.
What a foil membership includes
The details vary by provider, but a foil membership generally covers:
- A complete, compatible setup. Front wing, tail wing, mast, and fuselage that work together, sized for you rather than for a generic "intermediate" bracket.
- Component swaps. As you progress or switch between disciplines, you change the wing or mast instead of buying a new one and trying to resell the old one.
- Damage cover. Most memberships fold in some form of wear-and-repair protection, so a reef scratch is not a financial event.
- Maintenance and repair. The gear is inspected and repaired by the provider rather than by you.
What it is not: a lesson package, a day rental, or a rent-to-own finance plan. A membership is ongoing access to gear that stays maintained, with no resale problem at the end.
Membership, buying, and renting compared
| Buying | Day rental | Foil membership | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | High | Low | Low |
| Changing size or discipline | Resell and rebuy, with depreciation loss | Whatever the shop has that day | Swap a component |
| Repairs | Your problem | Included | Included |
| What you hold at the end | Ageing gear to resell | Nothing | Nothing to resell, nothing to dispose of |
| Best for | Settled riders on a stable setup | Occasional or holiday riders | Riders still progressing or changing disciplines |
Who a foil membership suits
The model earns its keep during progression. The wing that gets a beginner foiling is rarely the one they ride a year later, and the standard ownership path means buying the wrong size first, then reselling it at a loss. A membership removes that loss because you swap instead of resell. It suits riders who are still moving through sizes and disciplines, riders who would rather not deal with the used-gear market, and riders who want their gear maintained for them.
It is a weaker fit for riders who have settled on one setup they will ride for years. At that point, the per-session cost of owned gear is hard to beat.
How the FoilHive membership works
FoilHive is a Belgian non-profit that runs a monthly membership for hydrofoil gear, built, repaired, and shipped from its own workshop in Tarifa, Spain. You build a setup in the Kit Builder, it ships to you across most of Europe, and you swap components through the Gear Swap system as you progress. FoilCare damage cover is included, renewal shipping is included, and because FoilHive is a non-profit, membership fees go back into the shared fleet and repair capacity rather than to shareholders. The gear itself is made by sister brand ONIX Foils in the same Tarifa workshop.
For the cost side of the decision, our honest 3-year comparison runs the numbers against buying, and our origin story covers how and where the gear is made.
Common questions
Is a foil membership the same as a subscription?
In practice, yes. "Membership" and "subscription" describe the same recurring-access model. FoilHive uses "membership" because the fee also makes you part of a non-profit community that has a say in the organisation's direction, not just a billing relationship.
What happens to the gear when I cancel?
You return it. The provider inspects, repairs, and re-issues it to the next rider. You are not left with ageing gear to resell or dispose of.
Can I swap gear if I pick the wrong size?
Yes, that is the core of the model. Instead of reselling a wrong-sized wing at a loss and buying another, you swap the component. This is the single biggest financial advantage over buying during the progression years.
Does a membership include repairs?
Generally yes. With FoilHive, FoilCare damage cover is included and gear is repaired in the Tarifa workshop by the people who built it.
Where can I get a foil membership?
FoilHive offers one across most of Europe. You can see what a complete setup looks like in the Kit Builder.
